Taking Care of Self (Mind, Body & Soul)!

Did you get your yearly flu shot this year?  Do you get it every year?  They say that if you get it every year you build up a better immunity over the years to ever getting the flu because you got your flu shot.  Are you a believer?

My wife refuses to get a flu shot because it makes her sick.  She always talks about how when she has gotten it in the past she gets really sick.  Well, they are injecting a strain of the flu into you, right?  She would rather chance it throughout the flu season than to get the flu shot, get sick and be done (hopefully) getting sick during the flu season.

As for me, my mom has always had us get the flu shot growing up as long as I can remember.  Probably as long as they have offered it.  So, I still get it every year and I have my three kids get the flu shot or flu mist as well.  At times, I feel flu like symptoms but it’s not enough to make me miserable and not want to get it.  My kids seem to do well getting it as well.

My kids have actually had croup and are finally recovering from their coughs.  I hate to see my kids sick, it breaks my heart.  I have a two year old, almost three and he doesn’t get it, being sick and stay away from your sister or don’t drink out of her cup.  Well, he did and sure enough he got the croup.  My oldest got a cough but not the crummy croup like my five year old and two year old got.  So if we can stay healthy this flu season, I’ll do what it takes because my kids have been miserable and I have been freaking out about germs, washing hands, covering mouths, and putting your cups where brother can’t get them, etc…  Gratefully I didn’t get it.  I fought getting it but didn’t get it thank goodness!

There has been a lot of stuff going around.  When I took my kids to the doctor’s office I asked the nurse about strep and if it was going around.  She said it never stopped going around.  Usually, strep clears up through the summer months but it never stopped going around this year.  I was grateful my kids didn’t have strep because I don’t want them to be susceptible to it at all.  I’ve never had strep, knock on wood but my wife on the other hand gets it every year it seems.

So back to the topic, should I get a flu shot.  Health care providers recommend that if you are 6 months old or older you should get a yearly flu shot.  I’ve also heard that they strongly recommend it for the elderly as the flu has killed many elderly people over the years.  One new benefit recently discovered of the flu shot is that getting a flu shot reduces the risk of getting pneumonia which is connected with getting the flu.  Pneumonia is the leader in death and hospitalization in the United States.

Guess who has had pneumonia?  Well, my wife has had it…go figure huh!  Get your flu shot people!

Another really important thing to do beyond caring for your body through flu shots, is to take care of your mind and soul. A lot of signal interference to those two parts of your existence can become quickly clouded through substance abuse issues. If you can, get dialed in with your local 12 step program and attend such meetings as Alcoholics Anonymous (AA), Narcotics Anonymous (NA), etc. and learn of new and healthier ways to stop hurting yourself.

Granted, sometimes the disease of addiction can become so intertwined with your thoughts and body physiologically that you now have a hijacked brain and will most likely require professional treatment help to ever stop using. I have found that the rehabs in Utah have the most qualified treatment professionals than any other state in America.

Utah has the highest accidental overdose rate as well as prescription pill abuse and IP downloads for pornography. Now these statistics do not make them better than any other state upon first glance. Quite the contrary our natural intuition thinks, in fact! However, what the stats do mean is that Utah has a lot of shame-based issues to address and has been rapidly forced to learn how to treat such issues. Utah has well become the voice of reason when it comes to substance abuse and mental health disorders treatment.

Please do everyone a favor and take care of your self by addressing your mind, body and soul in every healthy way possible. I promise that you will not regret living a happier, healthier lifestyle for the rest of your days on earth. What do you have to lose except for feeling miserable all the time? Please feel free to comment below if you have any further questions or just want to add your two cents worth! I look forward to hearing from you! Have a wonderful day.

Family Fun!

I want to apologize for not being more present and posting on here as often as I would like. I was in the Flower-Mound Texas area visiting my brother who lives there. He recently purchased an older home and aside from helping him remodel it. I took the family for a quick vacation before the school year started back up again. It was a blast. We were able to get a lot of different home projects done except for one where we finally had to surrender and call a window expert in the area to help us out. They made it seem so easy and flawless. It was actually kind of embarrassing actually. What took us literally like 3 hours of fidgeting around pretending we knew what we are doing, they got all the windows (12 total!) replaced and installed in about same time.

Aside from the home remodeling, we took the time to enjoy some of the most amazing tourist attractions. We were able to see exactly where JFK was shot, not just the grassy knoll but also the building it is alleged it happened from, or at least where Oswald was found after the shooting. We went to Six Flags over Texas which was a lot of fun swell. The highlight for me was to go to Schlitterbahn water park. Even though it was about a 3 hour drive there, it was completely worth it. My family agreed but they also said it was more of a toss up between the amuse park and the water park. Either way we had a great time for the most part.

Recent Ski Getaway!

I had the awesome luxury and opportunity to visit a wonderful ski and snowboard resort/lodge in Utah two weeks ago called Solitude! They are a wonderful resort with many different amenities and terrain to explore. I believe they were recently acquired by Deer Valley which is a very prestigious ski resort located in Park City, Utah. Solitude is a great alternative when it comes to the ability to snowboard since Deer Valley is snooty (for a lack of a better term) and will not allow snowboarders onto their resort.

On the same note, do not get me started when it comes to the amazing snow in Utah. However with all that great snow, comes the potential for ice and rapid snow melt! Having said that; as an “out of towner” I parked my rental car too close to the front entrance of my lodging accommodations and wouldn’t you know it…..CRACK! My windshield was shattered into a million little pieces. I became very nervous and unsettled as I was in need of the best professional window replacement Utah (SLC Windows) has to offer and fast! Fortunately I was able to find service, which seemed to be nothing short of a miracle (that is why I am putting them in this blog for their super service and speedy response).

Anyways, after the initial mess up with the windshield and getting over that headache and hurdle I was abel to refocus and have an epic journey at Solitude resort up Big Cottonwood Canyon in Utah. Did I mention that they have the greatest snow on earth? They really do. If you do not believe me you have to see it for yourself! I have never been to Utah and thought they are just making some outlandish claim as to the greatest snow on earth! But it is true. So light and fluffy and on a good snow (powder) day you can have your tracks refilled by the time you get off the lift on another run.

To anybody seriously considering going to Utah for a skiing or snowboarding trip…do it! I promise you will not regret it! Please feel free to leave any comment and I will be happy to respond as soon as possible. Have a wonderful day and thanks for reading!

Gun Violence

Do you agree with the new gun control plan of President Obama?  He gave this speech today in which he was brought to tears and said that the day of the Sandy Hook shootings, was the saddest day in office for him.  I agree that a lot of gun violence has taken place in the United States lately but who is to blame the gun or the person carrying the gun?

The new gun control plan will require background checks for licensed stores that sell guns.  This new process will increase the mental health status as well as the criminal background checks.  When you buy a gun at a gun show or off of the internet you will be required to have a background check done.  The President wants to ensure that any gun bought is in the hands of an individual who is mentally sound as well as one who has a clear criminal background.  Of the Americans that took a poll on this new gun control plan, 76% support the new gun control plan and 22% oppose it. The consequence for messing up on a background check would be 5 years in prison and $250,000 fine.

Which side of the fence do you sit on?  I agree with President Obama that guns are getting into the hands of the wrong people.  Are guns the enemy or are the people buying the guns the enemy?  I don’t know if I agree with the President’s stand because increasing the process of background checks is only going to increase tax payers taxes.  Where do you think this money will come from?  They are going to have to come up with jobs to help fill the demand of increasing background checks on gun buyers.

How do you think gun sellers feel about this?  I can only imagine they are shaking their heads and asking why???  One of the presidential candidates mentioned today, that President Obama does not have the right to step on the toes of Congress.  He should be going to them and presenting his plan to them,  and this is where they discuss the plan and vote on the plan.  Since when does the president get to trump congress and change the process of how laws are brought into effect?  This has been President Obama’s pattern though, trying to go above congress and create laws because he feels he can with his power.

Please leave a comment and let me know your thoughts.  Something does need to be done.  Is President Obama’s plan the best idea for gun control in our country?

Christmas Approaching

I was wondering if anyone out there is as excited as I about Christmas approaching! I for one absolutely love the Holidays! But then again I love Jesus and everything that he stands for. So with the Christmas Season fast approaching us, I get goosebumps. I am truly one who can feel the “Christmas Spirit” as far as peace on earth and goodwill toward men! Now some secular groups are trying to take the Christ out of Christmas (X-mas)! I do not understand what is happening to this great nation of ours?

I think it is already a huge battle corporate America has won in commercializing the Holiday with spending money and thinking that giving gifts is what it is all about. The symbolism of the three wise men offering their very best to the newborn King is but a tiny part of the entire Christmas experience. Take for instance the candy cane. That over time has lost it’s true meaning. The candy cane is a small representation of the shepherds staff as they were looking over the sheep prior to an Angel visiting them and proclaiming the birth of the Messiah! Speaking of Angel, the star at the top of a Christmas tree is to represent the Northern star shining the way for the three wise men to find Christ. The tree is a supposed to be symbolic of the light broadening as it is shining down.

I hope that any of you reading this will take the time to get to know Christ a little bit better this Holiday Season! It is not cliche to say or hear the words “true meaning of Christmas”! It is my hope and prayer that you all find it and if you already have it in your heart, may you not be like the Grinch and keep it to yourself, but rather have Christmas Cheer all year round proclaiming His Holy Name!

Men Vs. Women Health

I recently read that there was a study conducted that showed that men do not require as much sleep as women do to function properly and even further that women and sleep deprivation can cause a lot of health complications. As a bonus to me being a male, the study further concluded that there is no true correlation to a male’s general health factor and a lack of sleep.

I found this study to be both fascinating and intriguing as well as possibly controversial. That is why I am sharing it on here with my audience. I personally took this as permission to stay up as late as I want as often as I want and it apparently it not good for my health despite what research is claiming. So I was wondering what others have to say about this and thought I would quickly share this and see what kind of response I would get back? I am looking forward to your feedback and will get some sleep now.

Comparing iPad models

Do you have a favorite iPad? Do you own more than one? If so, which is your favorite? I do not personally own more than one iPad but my sister has before owned more than one. She is the school teacher I told you about in another post. She was given an iPad 1 to help her be more technologically prepared to be a teacher. After about a year, she was given an upgrade and now has an iPad 2. She likes the iPad 2 better as it is more advanced than the iPad one.

Here is some information about the different types of iPads and comparing them in the youtube video above.

The youtube video shows a performance test of the iPad 1, 2, 3, and 4. The geek bench test didn’t work on the iPad 1. The iPad air has the most powerful processor with a score of 2188 (iPad 1 – 999, iPad 2 – 1887, iPad 3 – 1009 and iPad 4 – 1598). The iPad air is very fast as far as loading an app and the processing power is getting so much better with each new device. The next test is test the 3-D capabilities of the iPads and the results of the 3D mark and the graphics and the iPad air is leaps and bounds above the original iPad. The iPad air runs more quickly than the other iPads and processes things more quickly. The iPad 2 frames per second are at 7.5 where as the iPad air the frames per second are at 57.3. The video also talks about how quickly the iPads shut off and turn back on. This was a boot up and shut down test without any apps running in the back ground. The iPad 1 shut off the quickest but the iPad Air turned on the more quickly than the rest. Watch the YouTube video to see what else is compared among the iPads.

I found this youtube video helpful if you are tech savvy and interested in knowing the processing capabilities of your iPad. If you enjoyed this little iPad review, check back in and see what else I’ve posted in the days to come.

Who doesn’t want an iPad?

I remember when my sister first got an iPad.  She is a teacher and her school offered her one because she is a teacher, to help her as a teacher at her school.  I remember thinking, “oh, that is so cool, she is lucky!”  Then my sister-in-law was getting one from my brother for Christmas.  Next thing I knew, my other brother was getting an iPad mini for his wife for Christmas.  I felt kind of left out but it was not too big of a deal.  I soon got over it and moved on.  I was happy for them that they actually had the money to splurge and buy one.

When I first heard about the Apple iPad, I had the mentality that it would be amazing to be able to get one but I knew it was not in the near future.  It was not going to happen anytime soon because it was not a priority and my wife and I are really frugal and it would be hard to justify buying one as they are quite pricy.

I got hooked up with an iPhone through my work.  My business partner gave me his old phone and then he said the business would pay for the plan.  I think my business partner thought I needed to get with the times and upgrade my phone.  They were going to add me to their plan and pay for it.  Nice!  I will take it!  Getting hooked up!  Eventually, my business partner even added my wife to the family or business plan when she got her first iPhone.  That is another story!

My iPad Basics…

This post is designated to share more in-depth details about me, the iPad! There are so many different things to manage when you are learning your new Apple iPad!  I’ll share a few here, right now.
Managing your iCloud storage can be a new concept to newbies.  It is really cool that you can store things on your cloud though!  My iPhone is always telling me I need to update my iCloud storage because it has not been updated in months. It also tells me often I am almost out of storage.  Did you know that you can upgrade or downgrade your storage?  I did not until recently.  You do not have to store everything on your cloud.  You can be selective to free up some storage space.  By deleting old emails, photographs you have already down loaded to your computer, notes, or documents you no longer need, you can free up storage space.  All you have to do is go to settings, click on iCloud, click on storage and then manage storage (these steps should be the same for iOS 8 or later).  You can then see what apps are backed up on iCloud and delete the ones you do not need backed up to create more storage space on your iPhone.  It will ask you if you want to turn off backups and delete the backup data from the cloud.  Be sure to save any data to your iCloud prior to doing this so that you save what you want saved.
Do you know how to add things to your iPad, iPhone or iPod by using iTunes?  First, connect your iPad or iPhone to your computer and make sure you have the most recent version of iTunes downloaded and if you do not, download it.  After you have pulled up iTunes, select what you want to download to your iPad or iPhone and drag it to your iPad, iPhone or iPod and bippity-boppity boo, there you go!  Enjoy!

So your iPad and iPhone come with apps that are already downloaded on it but you may want to download more, right?  Most likely you will want to download more!  I know I have downloaded more and more apps over time as I learn about new apps, especially the free ones! LOL  The first thing you want to do is go to the App Store.  You can search for a specific app by entering it in the search box.  This is usually how I find apps I have heard about and I’m interested in downloading.  There are a lot of free apps out there but some do vary in price.  The second step is to click on the price and then your device will ask for your iTunes account details.  Once you have entered your information correctly, the app will begin downloading.  After it has downloaded, you can arrange your apps where ever you would like them.  You can keep them in folders to consolidate them or you can just keep them on your home screens if you prefer to do it that way.

iPad Freeze Problems

Have you ever had issues with your iPad freezing up?  Could it be because you have so many stinking tabs open?  I often complain to my wife that my iPad is freezing up.  She has had to remind me a couple of times now that it may be because I have too many tabs open.  At times, I get researching a ton of topics and do not have time to finish looking over all of them so I leave the tabs open.
Do you ever do the same thing?  Well, if you do, it makes your iPad, Mac Book, or iPhone work harder than it needs to or harder than it can handle and it makes it run slower.  Slow like a turtle.  This can be so dang annoying that I have often thought that the internet is just being slow and I will try again later when it is running faster. One day though, I told my wife what was going on and she seemed to not be having any problems with the internet as she was working on her Mac Book Pro. Just earlier in the day, my iPad was freezing up on me and I eventually just gave up and put it down because I thought the internet was just slow and having issues. Well, to my surprise it was not the internet at all, it was the 100 or so tabs I had up that were slowing my iPad down. To help you better grasp this concept, imagine your little hard working hard drive as a librarian getting books and what have you in a rather large open space library. The more requests you give her, the longer it will take to get more accomplished. If you do not request too much of her at once, she can be really proficient in her job. There really is no difference with your iPad and other technologies.
I hope now I have learned that I need to only keep maybe two or three tabs open at a time while surfing the internet or doing research.  It’s probably best to just go through and close out of everything at the end of the day.  I’ll probably forget and have to be reminded again to close out of my 100 plus tabs that I have opened but such is the life.
